We had a busy time last week in the sporting calendar when we saw 5 fixtures go ahead. On Wednesday, Wellow were the visitors as we hosted U11 Football and Netball.
The Football boys returned to form after a tough run of games, scoring 5 unanswered goals in a dominant performance. Highfields took a little time to find top gear but the deadlock was eventually broken by Will, poking home from a corner and soon after by Shahid, rounding the keeper. The goals continued after the interval, as Shahid went on to complete his hat-trick and Jaden capped the scoring to finish, 5 – 0. Well played, boys!
On Wednesday our B team of U11 girls played Wellow at home. Great teamwork was shown throughout with an excellent goal from Beatrix. Hi5 rules stipulate that players move positions every quarter and the girls did well to adapt to their new position after each rotation. We were slightly lacking in height which led to a Wellow victory but well done girls – a great match played by all!
On Thursday eight of our U11 netball squad went back into action in the Newark Schools League. Our first games was a tricky tie against a very tall and strong William Gladstone team. It took time for us to get going and succumbed to two late goals which put the fixture out of our reach.
Our teams have a reputation for determination and resilience. In the next fixture we played Bleasby and we were ahead early on with a goal from Lauren. We kept going and almost held off to the end, but a goal for Bleasby in the dying seconds of the game took the game away from us.
Unbowed, we regrouped and determined to show the league what we could do, we were ready from the first whistle against Chuter Ede. In the first half, despite a hatful of attempts, we just could not get the ball in the net. At half time Martha and Tessa took responsibility for shooting and the floodgates opened… we walked away 11 – 0 winners.
Proof if ever it is needed that tenacity prevails. Well done ‘Team Highfields’!
