Highfields are NEWARK Hi5 NETBALL CHAMPIONS 2018! Here is a brief summary of our journey to victory! It could not have been closer or more nail biting in the final!!
It was an exceptionally wet and miserable morning at Barnby Road yesterday (Saturday 28th April) and the Hi5 Newark Netball Tournament had already been postponed once because of the snow, but neither the girls nor our team of supporters’ spirits were dampened!
There were seven 7-minute games in the group stages. We finished our group in second place with the following results (5 wins, 2 draws):
HF 4 Lowes Wong 0
HF 0 Lovers Lane 0
HF 3 Sir Donald Bailey 0
HF 2 Farndon 0
HF 4 William Gladstone 0
HF 1 Barnby Rd 1
HF 4 Mount 1
We then went on to play Chuter Ede Balderton in the Semi final, which, due to the inclement weather, was also a single game of 7 minutes. This was an incredibly close game. Highfields went into the front first, 1-0, but Chuter Ede soon equalised. In no time we were 2-1 down but the girls persevered and we managed to claw it back, scoring another two goals to win 3-2. An amazing result!
Excitement mounting, we were lined up to meet our fellow small school Bleasby in the final. There was a fast and furious 8 minute game of netball with the final score 1-1. There then followed 3 minutes of extra time and one final rotation of the squad, which had its benefits as it meant all players were involved in the final! At the end of full time, it was still 1-1! This could only mean one thing…a penalty shoot out. The five players on court from each school had one attempt each at goal. We kept our cool…just…and took victory: 1-0!
The team and crowd went wild!!!
Very well done to all the Highfields squad. We are all extremely proud of them. Not only was the standard of netball brilliant but their sportsmanship and support for each other as a team were outstanding. Despite being very cold and wet by the end of the morning, we could not have been happier!
Thank you to Mrs Turner for inspirational coaching and for this tournament report and to all the parents and friends who turned out in the rain to keep cheering Highfields home! Now we need to find some room for this in the busy trophy cabinet…(think we may need a bigger one, Mr Thomson!).
