The corridors and rooms of our school were alive with the sounds of music last week. Our violin teacher Laura Gardiner organised a wonderful Summer School here at Highfields. We had students from Germany and all parts of the UK – including musicians from Wells Cathedral School and the Junior Royal College of Music – and the standard of playing was remarkable.
Through her work with the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain, Laura was able to bring in tutors who are some of the best music teachers in the UK. The Senior String Orchestra was conducted by Hilary Sturt, Head of Strings at St Paul’s Girls School and Professor at Junior Royal College of Music. We were also joined by the director of Pro Corda and players from Opera North, among others.
Highfields pupils from Forms 5 and 6 took part and it was lovely to one of our Form 6 leavers also joining in.
