As part of our study of Castles this term, Form 5 visited Newark Castle this morning, Wednesday 8th October. We braved the driving rain to walk into Newark and climbed to the top of the spiral staircase in the gatehouse, the most complete example of a Romanesque gatehouse to survive in England. From this vantage point we had a fantastic view across Newark and could almost see Highfields!
Alongside the gatehouse is the very room in which King John died. Beneath the castle we saw the undercroft where food and drink were stored and we also visited a tiny cell which was the debtors’ gaol.
