The U11 football team kicked off their Newark Schools Cup campaign this week, welcoming William Gladstone in the first round. In an even contest, Highfields started strongly as Shahid fired an early chance narrowly over. However it was the visitors who took the lead after some neat interplay. This lead was short lived, as Martha strongly rode the challenge of their centre half before neatly releasing Shahid to race beyond the defence and fire into the net – a goal of real quality. Unfortunately, this was as good as it would get for the Highfields team, as just before the half time whistle, the opposition stole in a header, unopposed from a corner. While the second half was to continue in a similar vein, it was our visitors who took their opportunities, while chances came and went for Highfields. Final score Highfields 1 – William Gladstone 5.
A tough one to take, as the score line did not reflect the game. Some fine contributions all round. Will C in goal gave a commanding performance, Kyle worked tirelessly but it was Martha’s energetic performance which caught the eye, with the opposition naming her PofM. Well done all, particularly given our season does not properly start until after Christmas.
